As a DRR, I often get Rotarians asking me if they should give money to Rotaractors who approach them with project funding requests. In this Ubuntu issue, I will address the big question of whether to give or not to give.

Every Rotarian needs to understand that Rotaractors are partners in service. To be a partner, there must be a certain level of understanding between the two parties. During my official visits to Rotaractors, I have laid key emphasis on the different approaches we can use to foster meaningful relationships/partnerships with Rotarians. I have further encouraged Rotaractors to draft and sign MOUs for each partnership reached and to develop a culture of accountability for any financial or in-kind assistance rendered by Rotarians or external donors. Therefore, for a partnership to be valid, each party must bring something to the table.

For every partnership request, there should be clear understanding of what roles are to be played by the parties and what benefits are to be attained. After roles/contributions have been clearly stated with deadlines and any other mandates, then drafting MOUs and signing them can proceed.

It goes without say that Rotarians and Rotaractors are generous people. Whereas giving is a way of life for us, I recommend that we give with caution and with a purpose. We should give when fully aware to whom and to what we are giving towards. Only then will our giving be meaningful. For each time we give, let us be fully aware the project or cause that we are giving towards and let’s ask for accountability for funds
given.

Let us take a moment to think, how many times have you been issued a receipt when you make a contribution towards a project? Or how many times have you taken off time to review an MOU that is presented to you before signing it off? Do you take off time to ask what percentage of the budget is the other party covering or what contribution they will be making towards that particular project?

Yes, we should give, but let us give with caution. We should give with full understanding of what we are giving towards, ask for accountability and follow up to make sure your funds are channelled towards the intended cause. As we give, let us give generously because when done right, our giving creates hope in the world.

Bufumira Island – A heartwarming initiative took root on the weekend of 11- 13 August 2023 when the Rotaract and Rotary Club of Bwebajja in collaboration with the Rotaract Clubs of Bwerenga, Garuga, Bunga, Kawempe, and the Rotary Club of Nalumunye embarked on the second phase of the Adopt Bufumira Island project. This remarkable effort has rekindled hope and greatly improved the lives of the islanders.

With an unwavering commitment to the common good, the Adopt Bufumira Island project addressed critical aspects of life and left a profound impact on every corner of the island. Rotary’s five core areas disease prevention and treatment, water hygiene and sanitation, basic education and literacy, maternal health, and environmental protection were at the forefront of this transformative mission. The project started with a health camp that provided a lifeline to nearly 300 individuals on the island. In addition to essential medical care, the camp served as an educational platform that spread valuable knowledge about health. HIV, malaria, and cancer testing services were carried out, bringing the gift of early detection and care.

The embrace of the project extended further, mothers-to-be were gifted with mama kits, each household with mosquito nets, and girls at school
with reusable pads. Adding a touch of sustainability, the planting of fruit trees at a local school underscored the project’s commitment to nurturing both the mind and the environment. The highlight of this encouraging venture was the commissioning of the island’s first bio-digester
toilet, two life-giving boreholes, and a renovated classroom block for Bufumira Primary School. The ceremony was graced by Rtr. Joseph B. Ssengooba, District Rotaract Representative-Elect, exuded a sense of promise for the island’s future. Ssengooba’s impassioned words made clear his determination to direct similar transformational efforts to other islands during the coming Rotary year with the aspiration of extending this lifeline to at least 10 other islands across Uganda.

In a deeply emotional moment, Grace Nakato, a resident of Bufumira Island, shared her thoughts: “The medical camp was a lifeline for us. Not only did we receive medical care, but we also gained invaluable knowledge on how to maintain our health. Mosquito nets and mama kits are a real blessing, which will undoubtedly improve our lives.” John Ssempala, a parent and dedicated community member, echoed this sentiment: “The new classroom block resonates with our hopes for a brighter future for our children. Boreholes bring us clean water, a basic necessity that now ensures the health and prosperity of our families.”

Prossy Namubiru, a schoolgirl, wore a bright smile as she exclaimed, “The reusable pads have lifted the weight off our shoulders and enabled us to go to school with confidence every day. Moreover, the newly planted fruit trees at our school have transformed the landscape into
a haven of delight.” The Adopt Bufumira Island project is a testament to the remarkable results that can be achieved through joint
efforts. It not only touches lives but also ignites the flame of hope in hearts. As ripples of the project continue to spread, Rtn. Annie Ninyesiga, President of the Rotary Club of Bwebajja, expresses her sincere gratitude to all who contributed to this triumph. This included Rotary
Family Health Days, TASO Entebbe, and Kisubi Hospital.

A special mention goes to international benefactors – Salmon HVAC, Green Collective, and Salmon Electric – for their role in helping to improve water and sanitation levels on the island. The transformation stories from Bufumira Island are not just anecdotes; they are a testament to the resilience, unity, and profound impact that compassionate efforts can have.

In a dynamic display of commitment and service, the Rotaract Club of Kigo embarked on two transformative projects that illuminated the power of unity and compassion within the community of Kakoola-Makindye Sabagabo. These initiatives, carried out on the 12th and 19th of August 2023, resounded with the essence of Rotaract’s core values.

The first endeavor, the “Bulungi Bwansi” project, resonated with Rotary’s focus on water and sanitation. With unwavering dedication, the
Rotaractors collaborated with partners such as Meridian Mediation Services, community leaders, and the Kakoola residents themselves.
The community’s main water source underwent a remarkable transformation, as it was cleansed and revitalized to provide clean water, elevating
the community’s overall well-being. A symphony of hands united once again on the 19th of August, when the Rotaract Club of Kigo orchestrated the “Meridian Medical Camp.”

This medical initiative aligned seamlessly with Rotary’s yearlong theme of ending polio and focused on maternal health. Collaborating with Meridian Medical Services and Kampala School of Health Sciences, the camp extended a healing touch to over 400 patients. The scope of care was comprehensive, ranging from dental services, immunizations, and health education to counseling, general check-ups, and laboratory tests. A noteworthy feat emerged from the camp—a collection of 45 units of life-saving blood, a testament to the depth of impact the initiative had on both donors and recipients.

The Rotaract Club of Kigo, composed of dedicated individuals with a shared vision, ensured that every facet of these projects bore the imprint of hope, care, and positive change. With a landscape that mirrored their own, the Kakoola community was touched by this vibrant spirit, experiencing the embrace of support from its neighbors. Both projects illuminated the essence of Rotaract— bringing together diverse talents, expertise, and compassion for the betterment of humanity. The projects were an embodiment of “Service Above Self,” a living testament to the ethos of Rotary and Rotaract.

As the Rotaract Club of Kigo fostered an environment of hope, it also breathed life into the core ideals of Rotary’s humanitarian pursuits. Through these initiatives, they have set a remarkable example, proving that through collective action, even the seemingly insurmountable challenges can be overcome, radiating optimism and creating a ripple effect of change.

Rotaract Clubs, with their vibrant community engagement and commitment to service, have long served as a platform for young individuals to make a positive impact. However, the challenge of sustaining membership levels persists, prompting a closer examination of the factors that lead members to leave. Throughout the month of August, I had the privilege of visiting numerous Rotaract Clubs, engaging in insightful conversations
about membership attraction, retention, and engagement. This article delves into the reasons behind membership attrition and proposes
strategies to foster lasting connections.

Membership Attraction:
Attracting new members is the first step in maintaining a healthy and dynamic Rotaract Club. During my visits, I observed that clubs
that effectively communicated their missions, activities, and impact tended to draw more interest. However, some clubs struggled to
articulate their value proposition, leading to a lack of enthusiasm among potential members. To counter this, clubs could focus on showcasing
success stories and tangible outcomes of their projects, thereby sparking interest and resonating with prospective members.

Membership Retention:
While attracting new members is crucial, retaining them is equally important. The discussions revealed that one common reason for members
leaving was a mismatch between expectations and reality. Some members joined with grand visions of immediate, large-scale projects, but became disillusioned when confronted with the practical challenges of implementation. By setting clear expectations during the onboarding
process and providing mentorship, clubs can mitigate such discrepancies and foster a sense of belonging.

Engagement:
Engagement emerges as a cornerstone of member retention. Clubs that actively involved members in decision-making and project planning
demonstrated higher levels of commitment. Conversely, clubs that relegated new members to passive roles risked their disengagement over time. To enhance engagement, clubs should promote open dialogue, encourage diverse participation, and create opportunities for members to take ownership of projects that resonate with their interests and skills.

Challenges Faced:
Several common challenges emerged as factors contributing to membership attrition. Time constraints were a recurring theme, with members
citing demanding academic and professional commitments. To address this, clubs could consider flexible meeting schedules and online
participation options to accommodate varying schedules. Another challenge was the lack of a sense of belonging, often stemming from
inadequate integration of new members into the club’s social fabric. Regular social events, teambuilding activities, and mentorship initiatives can
help bridge this gap.

Communication Breakdown:
Effective communication plays a pivotal role in member retention. A lack of consistent and transparent communication about club activities, decisions, and opportunities often left members feeling disconnected. Utilizing various communication channels, including social media,
newsletters, and group chats, can help keep members informed and engaged. Moreover, seeking regular feedback from members and
actively addressing their concerns fosters a sense of ownership and involvement. Navigating the ebb and flow of Rotaract Club
memberships requires a comprehensive approach that addresses attraction, retention, and engagement. As observed during my August
visits, the clubs that thrived were those that tackled membership challenges head-on, fostering an environment of inclusivity, meaningful
participation, and clear communication. By aligning member expectations, providing avenues for meaningful engagement, and
adapting to the evolving needs of young individuals, Rotaract Clubs can establish themselves as enduring platforms for social
change and personal growth.

Rotaract Club of Makindye West

On the 19th of August 2023, an aura of enthusiasm and purpose enveloped the Western Zone 2, 3, and 4 Rotaract clubs as they had the distinct honor of hosting District Governor Rtn. Francisco Ssemwanga from D9214. The significance of this visit was profound, as it marked not only a meeting with dedicated Rotaractors but also the launch of the REI Ntungamo edition in the western region.

The visit kicked off with a poignant tree planting initiative across three different locations: Children Peace Park CPP, Ntare School, and Innovation
Village. A total of 100 trees were planted, symbolizing the deep-rooted commitment of Rotaractors to environmental sustainability and community betterment.

An enlightening symposium centered around environmental issues was the highlight of the day, coinciding with the celebration of International Youth Day. This session, expertly led by Innovation Village, delved into the pressing matters concerning our environment and engaged young minds in meaningful discussions about their role in its preservation.

During his impactful speech, DG Rtn. Francisco Ssemwanga urged club presidents to proactively seek district grants, fostering sustainable initiatives that resonate with Rotaract’s core values. He emphasized the significance of encouraging Rotaractors to actively participate in district activities such as DCA, REI, and the Western Meger Fellowship. The importance of the district’s focus on polio eradication was reiterated, with an impassioned call to comprehend and align with the district’s goals.

A sage piece of advice was dispensed to all present: the notion that decisions made today hold the power to shape the future. This resonated deeply, reminding Rotaractors that their actions today pave the path for impactful tomorrows. The visit culminated in a final tree planting ceremony at Innovation Village, encapsulating the essence of growth, sustainability, and collective responsibility. In closing, a heartfelt acknowledgment was extended to Rtn. Sankara, representing Innovation Village, for graciously hosting DG Rtn. Francisco Ssemwanga’s visit. The gratitude expressed encapsulated the spirit of unity and appreciation that thrives within Rotaract circles.

Basic education and literacy go hand in hand, forming the foundation upon which individuals build their futures. Literacy equips individuals with the ability to read, write, and comprehend information, enabling them to access knowledge, make informed decisions, and participate
actively in society. Basic education, on the other hand, provides a structured learning environment that imparts critical skills and knowledge, empowering individuals to overcome challenges and pursue their aspirations.

Africa faces numerous challenges in its education system. These challenges contribute to a cycle of illiteracy and hinder socio-economic development. Addressing these issues requires collective efforts, and this is where we as Rotaractors can make a significant difference through;
Advocacy and Awareness: Rotaractors can raise awareness about the importance UMOJA September 2023 | 19 of education and literacy in local
communities, highlighting the long-term benefits they offer.

Advocating for policy changes and increased government investment can lead to improved access to education for all. Even a simple social
media campaign can be eye opening. Infrastructure Enhancement: Rotaractors can collaborate with local schools and communities to improve infrastructure, such as building classrooms, libraries, and sanitation facilities. These improvements create conducive learning environments and encourage student retention. These can take time due to the financial implications however we can always on-board corporate partners to
ease this.

Teacher Training and Support: By organizing workshops and training sessions, Rotaractors can help enhance the skills of teachers in rural areas. This empowers educators to provide better instruction, fostering a more engaging and effective learning experience for students. Mobile Libraries and Literacy Programs: Creating mobile libraries and literacy programs can bring books and educational resources to underserved
areas. Rotaractors can organize reading sessions, storytelling events, and educational games to instill a love for learning among children.

Scholarship and Mentorship Programs: Establishing scholarship programs and mentorship initiatives can provide financial assistance to deserving students and guide them on their educational journey. Rotaractors can serve as role models, motivating young
learners to excel academically. Community Engagement: Rotaractors can partner with local communities to organize workshops on financial literacy, health education, and vocational training. These skills complement formal education and empower individuals to make informed life
choices.

We understand that We Rotaractors are youth who are just growing and our constraints are quite many but together we are the change we need to see. Our small collections here and there in terms of time, skills and other resources make a great impact in a child’s life. These and so many more are just some of the ways we can do create this transformation in our education. Keep in mind that a holistic education must touch the Hands,

Heart and Head! And in the words of the great Nelson Mandela; “Education is the most powerful tool we can use to change the world!” Let’s go change the world one Rotaractor at a time.
